Friends For Life Bike Rally

Posted by 2 on

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a social gathering of one of the bike teams who will be riding 660 km from Toronto to Montreal starting Sunday, July 25th. This group of friends has been training and preparing for this ride for months but it’s not all work and no play! They are obviously a fun group who share a dedication to raising funds for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA). Did you know there are more than 18,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto, approximately one quarter of Canada's HIV-positive population? I didn’t! This particular team has raised almost $130,000.00. The entire event will raise over one million dollars – that’s over half of the annual operating budget of the Toronto PWA. There are approximately 315 riders (and 90 crew) in total so that’s an average of over $3,000.00 raised per rider! What motivates people to sit on a bike seat for 6 straight days? My butt aches just thinking about it. All of the riders share a passion to support their friends and loved ones who have died or are ill with HIV/AIDS. As mentioned, this group knows how to party and isn’t afraid to stand out in a crowd. There are different theme days, for example, one day is “dress” day as distinct from “dress-up” day. Another is RED day and that’s where Tail Wags comes in … there will be over 30 riders wearing the Red Devil helmet cover as they ride in to Kingston on the 3rd day. You won’t be able to miss them! There’s even a super hero day so next year, I’ll be working with the team to create a special look for them. It will be a challenge to create a costume that won’t get stuck in the spokes of the bike or be too hot but I’m up for the challenge. Are you up to the challenge of riding with this group? It’s not just for the super elite athlete. There was one person I spoke to yesterday who hadn’t ridden a bike since he was a small boy but he’s been training for the last several months and he says he ready. And even if you don’t want to ride, you can still support their efforts by donating money to their cause:
