What's The Ideal Size Business?

Posted by 2 on

I’m at the enviable stage with my business, Tail Wags Helmet Covers, that I’m busy but not overwhelmed! I love what I’m doing and my life feels in balance. This equilibrium took a while to achieve because the first 3 to 4 years of setting up my company and establishing a client base were crazy. Seven days a week were the norm. Now I’m able to take the odd day off and not feel guilty. Tail Wags has been operating for almost 5 years and, at this point, I’m in a position to consider expanding the business by launching a new product line or maintaining the status quo. It’s a tougher decision than I thought it would be. On the one hand, bigger is supposed to be better … or is it? Do I really want to take on the stress of pushing the boundaries of the business all over again? Expansion would require taking on an additional employee who would share responsibility for the production, marketing and sales of the new line. I’d also have to move my business out of my home. I’m already cramped for space and my family is tired of my Tail Wags inventory monopolizing the basement. On the other hand, I am confident the new line would be successful. I have gained a lot of knowledge in the last 5 years. My contacts in the industry and within the media are solid. Tail Wags has a fabulous reputation for an excellent quality and adorable product as well as incredible customer service so it’s a great platform for launching the new line. And quite frankly, I’ll be in a better position to retire in 15 years if my husband and I are able to “sock away” more in savings! That basically sums up my dilemma. Luckily I don’t have to rush the decision so I can ponder the situation further before making up my mind. But one thing is for certain … I totally trust my instincts so whatever direction I go in, I’m 100% sure it will be the right one for me! Are you at a crossroads right now too? What are you contemplating?

  • Ah yes, that point in every business where you have to decide to Go Big or stick to the status quo. This is quite often, but not always, also associated with having to decide to dump a whack of money into the business again. Or, quit your ‘day job’ even though you aren’t quite making enough to really do that, but you cannot move forward if you don’t.

    All involve risks.

But this is also the point in a business you can pat yourself of the back and say “Wow! Look where I have gotten to!”

I look forward to hearing what you decide, when you decide it :-)
