Tail Wags Helmet Covers has always advocated for helmet safety legislation so when I was approached about posting the following article on my blog site, I readily agreed! As snow falls on mountains all around the world, resorts begin gearing up their cable cars and opening their doors for winter 2010-11. Pro's and amateurs alike will all share in that same feeling of excitement as they embark on fun-filled holidays, aspiring to carve fresh powder. There is one thing however, that will not be shared amongst skiers and snowboarders, and that is a general attitude towards protection. Recent research conducted by British travel company, Essential Travel, has determined that nearly 40 per cent of Brits don't wear a helmet whilst skiing or snowboarding - despite 75 per cent having suffered an accident on the slopes. In the EU there are an estimated 300,000 snow sport related injuries each year and in the US winter sports related head injuries totaled nearly 17,000 last season. Unfortunately these figures were found to be a result of a general attitude amongst winter sports fans with survey takers stating that wearing a helmet is “impractical”, “unnecessary” and, a personal favourite, “unstylish”! When the average recreational skier reaches speeds of 15 mph - 25 mph, not wearing a helmet can prove to be very dangerous. Children are more at risk on the slopes than adults but fortunately, wearing a helmet is compulsory for children in many European ski resorts. It is imperative that all winter sports lovers, young and old, are made aware of the importance of wearing a helmet and the dangers of not wearing one. From Wednesday the 1st of December, Essential Travel, in collaboration with Headway, the brain injury association and leading winter sports retailer Ellis Brigham are encouraging skiers and snowboarders to ‘Use their Head’ and wear helmets this winter. It is campaigns like these that will hopefully decrease the number of accidents this season and go a long way in changing riders' attitudes towards safety. Food for Thought: Can this campaign be assisted by the resorts themselves? Can they implement strategies of their own to help keep riders safe? Will European safety standards be adopted by the US and Canada?
