Monkey See, Monkey Do!

We all want our kids to be healthy, active and happy. Do you know what is the best thing you can do as a parent to encourage this? It’s simple, be active yourself and your kids will likely follow suit! A recent Active Healthy Kids Canada survey reported that only 9% of boys and 4% of girls spend one hour a day on the “moderate to vigorous” physical activity benchmark set by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (i.e. walking quickly, skating, bike riding and skateboarding). It’s time we changed this statistic by encouraging our kids to be more active. Next time you see your kids sitting in front of the television, why don’t you invite them to join you for a bike ride or even suggest a walk to your local park? If you’re headed to your fitness club, how about taking your kids with you? When my kids were young, we enjoyed playing a game of squash with them in the squash courts. We didn’t worry about the rules of the game and how many times the ball bounced, we were happy just to whack a ball together and because we used old racquets, it didn’t matter if the racquets were accidentally smashed. Please keep in mind that it’s best to focus on fun, not rivalry. Kids need a break from competition too so how about trying an activity that provides activity simply for the joy of exercising. What’s your family’s favourite physical activity to do together?

  • I completely agree. Every morning my son and I take a walk. If I’m feeling particularly lazy my son nudges me to go. I hope that he always stays active!

  • I don’t have any kids but I do love the idea of family no-rules squash – it sounds like such a great time!
