We All Need A Good Laugh!

It’s the challenge of every business owner. How do you catch people’s attention when you only have 30 seconds to “WOW” your customers? Today I was a guest speaker for 3 classes of Queen’s University Commerce marketing students and we discussed some of the following ideas:
  • Life is too short to take our selves too seriously.
  • We all need a good laugh every once in a while.
  • Sex sells.
  • People’s attention span is relatively short.
[caption id="attachment_2058" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Even automobile companies seem to believe sex sells best."][/caption] This year’s Commerce undergraduate students have been assigned the task of creating a social media marketing campaign or video for Tail Wags Helmet Covers and I stressed the need for the advertisement to be FUN. After all, having FUN is what Tail Wags is all about and, of course, promoting helmet safety. As a “family friendly business”, I had to blackball the idea of including sex to help sell my product line. I can’t wait to see what projects the Commerce students create for Tail Wags. The winning project will be awarded a $500.00 prize! Before closing I wanted to give each of you a good laugh. I was a guest speaker for the Queen’s University Executive Accelerated MBA class in May 2011. Each team of students was asked to create a YouTube video that would make people laugh and leave a lasting impression about the product they were promoting. My favourite submission was the following video that marketed Tic Tok watches: What commercials or advertisements have you seen that have left you with a lasting impression or made you laugh? Which commercials annoy you every time they pop up on your TV screen?

  • Hey Karyn congratulations on your campaign with Queen’s University! I can’t stand the Rogers commericals because they are SO loud! But I LOVE the Telus Mobility commercials with all the cutie animals! I also liked the Bell commercials during one of the winter olympic games where the beavers were the spokesmen. Will share your post on Facebook!

  • You’ll remember the commercial when you aren’t trying to remember it! I call them my Alzheimer’s moments. I can’t wait to see the final submissions from the Queen’s students as well.

  • I’m excited to see what the commerce students come up with. Should be really fun.
I love good, clever, fun advertising and I know I saw a commercial last night that fit the bill — but I can’t remember what it was. I’m not sure if that makes it a marketing failure or it’s because my memory is kind of sketchy these days. (I’m choosing the latter.)
