Pukes, Turncoats & Hypocrites

Posted by 2 on

Don CherryWhy is this man so popular when he keeps blurting out ridiculously inappropriate and stupid things? Don Cherry’s latest tirade involved several former NHL players: he called the players “pukes”, “turncoats” and “hypocrites” because they spoke out lately about hockey violence. In particular, the players voiced concern about hockey violence, head injuries and the link later in life to alcoholism, drugs and depression. Don Cherry seems to think it’s perfectly okay for hockey violence to continue. This is not the first time Don Cherry has gotten himself in trouble because of his offensive language. I’ll never forget his comments when Rob Ford assumed the position of Mayor of the City of Toronto. Here’s a sampling of his speech:
  • “Put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks,”
  • “I’m wearing pinko for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything.”
  • “Well, what can I tell you?” he said of those criticizing his speech. “Don’t invite me. You don’t invite a pit bull. If you want a pit bull, you get a pit bull.”
But the former NHL players may get the last laugh in this case. These players are considering legal action because they are not satisfied with the public apology Don Cherry later issued for his comments. Personally, I’m delighted to hear they may take action. Don Cherry needs to think twice before he opens his big mouth again … particularly on the topic of head injuries! What do you think? Is Don Cherry out of line or is he just having “fun”? Either way, you’re in good company because Don Cherry has plenty of fans as well as enemies.

  • I don’t know Mr. Cherry, (I am not Canadian, nor do I watch TV.) but, I do have an opinion about those people who seem to feel it is OK to trash others.

Freedom of speech comes with responsibility as all freedoms do. Yelling, “Fire!” in a crowded building is wrong, as is putting down other people, using language that is less than kind and performing other acts of verbal violence.

My very wise mother used to say, “If you don’t have something nice to say, keep your mouth shut!”

So on that note, I celebrate those who speak with loving-kindness. They make the world a better place.

Regarding hockey: As a teen, I loved hockey. I come from the era of Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins. This was when they actually played hockey, when it was almost an art to skate across the rink keeping the puck from the other team. Yes, occasionally tempers flared, but not like today.

As things have developed, with more and more speed as well as increased violence, helmets are not only wise, but essential. I have had several experiences over the past thirty years where neighborhood children were either been killed or severely injured from head injuries while playing hockey. None of them had helmets on.

Hope the hockey teams win their suit, not for revenge, but to make the statement that this type of behavior is unproductive, mean-spirited and just plain wrong.

  • I’d like to think they are censoring him but it’s hard to believe he still gets away with some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth.

  • Maybe Don Cherry will finally be exposed for the idiot that he truly is! Thanks Pam for your comment.

  • Dear Linda,
Thank you so much for your insightful comment on my blog site. I totally agree with you regarding freedom of speech. It’s not okay if it impinges on the rights of others. Interestingly, there is a case going to the Supreme Court of Canada today where a man who is promoting anti-gay propoganda is challenging the legislation that effectively “shut him up” years ago. I hope the side against “hate speech” wins against the side advocating for “free speech”. Too many people are using the free speech legislation as a defense allowing them to promote racist and other hurtful nonsense. Your mother summed it up perfectly when she said, “If you haven’t got something nice to say, keep your mouth shut”!

  • Well, I am not going to lie….I love Uncle Don.
And with that said, I think that some of it is his own unfiltered opinion and the other part is for entertainment. That’s what he’s known for.
Does he cross the line? Sure. Absolutely.
That’s why they censor his show now….I think….
