Bigger Is Not Always Better

Restaurant takeovers are occurring fast and furiously. Here are two examples:
  • Cara Operations (owner of Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s) bought Prime Restaurants (owner of Casey’s and East Side Mario’s).
  • MTY Food Group recently acquired the Mr. Sub sandwich chain.
In summary, the large restaurant chains are taking a greater share of the business away from independents. At the same time, the big chains are getting bigger through acquisitions and further growth. Why should this concern you? Do you really want to have fewer and fewer choices of places to eat? My experience typically shows that when a restaurant is taken over, it loses its “personal touch”. As well, food is made off-site and shipped in to the individual restaurants frozen. I personally prefer small restaurants where the owners are actually back in the kitchen cooking and/or at least supervising the meal preparations. On a similar note, I wrote a blog article several months ago titled, “Small Businesses are Feeling the Pinch”: The theme of this article was that independently owned small retailers are being wiped out in this economy. In its place are large chain stores such as Shoppers Drug Mart, Chapters/Indigo, and Walmart. There’s nothing wrong with these stores but, as a consumer, will you be happy when there are no alternative places to shop? If the above worries you too, what can you do to help? Please help support your local retailers by giving them your business. McDonalds will survive if you choose to spend your money elsewhere but the small independent stores may not!

  • Dear Sabina,
I’m exactly the same. Somehow the food doesn’t taste quite “real” from the big chain restaurants.

  • Actually, I’d rather eat on independent food chains, I don’t know why but maybe I’m not used to eat on Mc Donalds. LOL!!

  • Scary indeed! We need the small businesses to generate new growth in our economy.

  • Funny, we were watching Diners, Drive In, and Dives on the food network and my husband said “We don’t have any restaurants like that here”…we have all big chains of restaurants and hardly any locally owned ones. It is really scary when you think about it.
