Passion is Contagious!

During a recent conference on e-commerce and entrepreneurs, I was asked what qualities I consider essential in entrepreneurs and the first thing that came to mind was “passion”. Why is passion on the top of my list? Because without passion, it’s hard to keep up the energy and commitment required as an entrepreneur to ensure the business succeeds. It is also the quality that distinguishes one business from another. There’s a wonderful quote from the French philosopher, Denis Diderot (1713-1784) that expresses this beautifully:

Only passions, great passions can elevate the soul to great things.

Passion in a leader is a deep and abiding commitment to a cause, a vision, or an enterprise. Without passion, the business is unlikely to survive the first 3 to 5 years (definitely the make or break period for new companies).

Passion is infectious within an organization and will spread to co-workers and customers. Have you ever walked in to a business that buzzes with energy and enthusiasm? It’s obvious everyone enjoys their work and it feels good to do business with them. In contrast, there are some businesses where employees are more interested in watching the clock than serving customers.

Passion will also sustain you through periods of adversity. Every business has its ups and downs. Getting through the tough times is easier when you LOVE what you do!

What is your passion? Are you living your dream? Or are you suppressing the desire to try something new for “practical” reasons? We are all GREAT at something … the key to happiness is discovering that passion!

  • I was very passionate about nursing although my parents didn’t want me to waste my intelligence on it. They wanted me to be a doctor (huge biology whiz over here)
But my heart was in nursing so I went for it.
I did what I enjoyed doing and it was incredible.
