Jonathan Wookey, a 22 year old student, had everything in life going for him. He was a brilliant academic, talented athlete, well-liked, and good looking young man. He was on vacation with friends in Cyprus celebrating the end of the school year when he died suddenly of head injuries suffered when he slipped on the tiles around the poolside before his usual early morning swim. The impact of his fall caused a severe concussion and, by the time he was discovered by hotel staff and his friends, it was too late to save him. This horrible tragedy reminds all of us our brains are extremely fragile. Concussions are serious! Of course, I'm not encouraging anyone to refrain from participating in sports. In fact, I believe being active is the key to good health for all of us. That said, we need to find ways to better protect ourselves from head injuries. So far, safety helmets are the best piece of equipment we can use. Please #StopNakedRiding and wear a safety helmet whenever you bike, skate, ski, snowboard, toboggan, ride a horse, skateboard, and rollerblade (have I forgot to list any sport?)! My thoughts and prayers are with the Wookey family for the sudden loss of their son. Every time I hear about these accidents, I become even more resolved to spread the helmet safety message!
