No Helmet No Insurance

Helmets are now a mandatory prerequisite for anyone purchasing an Essential Travel Winter Sports Policy (part of the Thomas Cook group). Key to the Essential Travel’s “Use Your Head” campaign, this U.K. based company is ensuring its customers wear safety helmets by writing this stipulation in to their travel insurance policies. According to the company, there has been an increase in the percentage of insurance claims on the winter sports packages for head injuries and they’d like to reverse that trend. Furthermore, to show their commitment to raising helmet safety awareness, Essential Travel is donating £1 (from the cost of every policy sold to willing helmet wearers) to Headway, the charity that works to improve life after brain injury in the U.K. It seems an inevitable step for insurance companies wanting to minimize the risk of head injuries to ensure their clients have the best protection available. What do you think of this policy? Do you think North American Insurance companies should follow suit?

  • Horrified to hear what happened to your buddy from grade school. It’s one of the moments that you remember for the rest of your life.

  • I was so relieved when I saw that all of my son’s hockey coaches for hockey camp were wearing helmets.
My buddy from grade school bumped into one of his and he wasn’t wearing a helmet. He went into a coma and died the next day. It’s scary to think that one little bump can do so so much damage.
    Wear HELMETS!!
