Not a Great Start to the Day!

Posted by 2 on

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 10.01.31 AMI started out on my usual walk with the dogs this morning at the local golf course. It's a fairly steep hill so I'm always careful to watch out for ice but, this morning, I didn't see it coming. Sure enough, my legs went straight out from under me and I took the full force of the fall on my head against the concrete! As I'm laying there, I'm running the signs of a concussion checklist through my mind:
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizure or convulsion
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Amnesia
  • "pressure in head"
  • Neck pain
  • Balance problems
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Feeling slowed down
  • Feeling like "in a fog"
  • "Don't feel right"
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty remembering
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • More emotional
  • Irritability
  • Sadness
  • Nervous or anxious
Fortunately a group of women walking by came to my rescue and escorted me back to my car along with my dogs. They offered to take me to Emergency but I was confident I could drive the 3 minutes back to my house. The first call I made was to my doctor who assured me that if I didn't lose consciousness and I remember the events before and after my fall, I don't need to head to Emergency but I do need to REST today! Of course, I'll self-monitor how I'm feeling today and won't hesitate to get a friend to drive me to Emergency if my symptoms worsen. This experience is an important reminder of how easily accidents can happen and just how fragile our brains really are. Although I'm not likely to start wearing a safety helmet while walking my dogs, I will continue to advocate for helmet use during all sports such as skiing, skating, biking etc. Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 9.59.12 AMI'm also going to replace my boot tacks before heading out on the next dog walk. Only 2 days ago, I lost my boot tacks somewhere at the golf course. I immediately headed over to Sporting Life for a replacement pair but they are completely sold out in all of their stores in my size. If you haven't heard of these great inventions, I highly recommend them for anyone who walks in the winter on icy sidewalks etc. They are a life saver ... literally!
