Richard Branson, Founder & CEO of The Virgin Group, is one of the richest men in the world. But it wasn't his money that saved him in a serious biking accident last week ... it was his safety helmet. During a training ride for an upcoming fundraising event, Branson hit a speed bump and ended up being hurled over the handlebars. "My life was literally flashing before my eyes. I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head first towards the concrete road, but fortunately, my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life" wrote Branson in his blog post.
I am always amazed at the number of adults who refuse to wear a bike helmet especially when a $40.00 helmet could save their life. It seems like one of the most obvious and inexpensive ways to protect your brain but I sometimes feel as if I'm pissing in the wind because the safety helmet message often falls on deaf ears.
I know from experience that a helmet is the best investment to staying safe after my ski helmet saved my life when I skied full speed in to a tree. But it is often the death of a celebrity (i.e. Natasha Richardson's skiing accident that caused her death) to the near death experience of Richard Branson that serves as a wake-up call to the world.
As an advocate for mandatory helmet laws for ALL ages, I will not stop promoting the helmet safety message until it's routine to wear a helmet for all sports. In 1990, Australia was the first country to make wearing bicycle helmets mandatory and the result has been a 69% reduction in the number and severity of head injuries. (source: 2010 Queensland Dept of Transport & Main Roads study). I will also continue to create FUN and whimsical helmet covers that increase your visibility on the roads and ski slopes. With that in mind, I've created a new "SPLAT" helmet cover that displays the message, "Use Your Head! Wear a Helmet!" message. Of course I'll be sending Richard Branson a complimentary cover ... does anyone know his mailing address?
p.s. The new SPLAT helmet cover will be ready within the next few weeks ... stayed tuned to our website in order to guarantee you'll be one of the first to receive one.
